Showing of  RPS International Slide portfolio
Reprise of best of our Club’s work, 2006/7 season.

Notes

Presentation of the Royal Photographic Society’s International Slide Portfolio, 1996. Only a few members saw this at Bovey Tracey & the club has purchased a copy on CD so all members can have the benefit of this outstanding collection of work.
Time permitting, we will also reprise some of our Club’s best work from 2006/7.

Fotospeed evening. John Herlinger from this well known specialist photo company will lead a session on  printing advice and demonstrate Fotospeed’s extensive range of papers, inks, and hardware.

Notes

Tutorial & discussion, Studio Photography. Members thought last year’s “Portrait & Still Life” event a great success, but that it needed better preparation. Ahead of our studio lights session on 26 October, we will therefore have an evening looking at tips, equipment & techniques for working successfully in these controlled conditions.  Please bring the camera you plan to use on 26 October. We hope that Victoria, who will be modelling for us on 26th October, will also be able to attend this preparatory evening too.

Photoshop Evening. We will spend some time looking at image files brought along by members. Then, building on what we have learned from the Fotospeed night, look at print & presentation issues.

First Club Trophy Competition. New rules this season; please do check these out! Two pictures in each of the three classes permitted. This is a general competition with no set theme.

Studio Photography; Practical Evening
Notes

Practical Evening, Studio Photography. To be led by Andy Wyatt. Some members have kindly agreed to bring along, and set up, studio lighting so we can all try our hand at this genre. Bring your camera and, if you wish, your own tripod. A professional model has been engaged for the evening. Please note that use of the main lighting set-up will have to be on a rotational basis, so we shall also  have some table-top or other rigs established to ensure members have a full evening’s  activities.

A portfolio presentation and a discussion about more in-depth ways of appreciating images

Ken Holland; “Looking at Photographs”. As well as showing us his latest portfolio, Ken is going to take the opportunity to talk about methods of evaluating and appreciating pictures, both our own and the work of others.

Our last two club competitions are themed “The World in Close-Up” and “Danger”. To help with the lead-up to these, tonight we will spend half our time looking at Macro Photography and the other half looking at taking pictures in “Action” or in extreme conditions.

You might like to know that Western Counties Photo Federation are celebrating their 75th anniversary with an all-day convention at Exeter University. We await final details, but as it is on our doorstep, members may well wish to attend.

35mm Slide Evening. As slides will not feature in our competitions this year, this is an opportunity to show and discuss work in this medium. No age/subject limits, show what you like. We may find time to talk about related subjects like archiving/digitising slides as well.

SDPL 4-way Print Competition at Newton Abbot

Inter-club 4-way Print Competition. This is the first of our matches in this new format and it would be good to turn up with a strong contingent of supporters. Please note this is an AWAY fixture on a TUESDAY and is being hosted by Newton Abbot.

Members’ Digital Presentation Evening. All members are invited to show off their digital projected images. These can be individual photos, panoramas, “slideshows” or whatever you like.
Timings will depend on numbers, but plan on having a five-minute “slot” to show your work.

“Keeping it Safe”. A workshop and discussion about managing your images so they are safe and can be found when needed. Nearly everyone has a different approach to this problem, and most of us have had a disaster at some time or another!  Have you found the ideal system yet?

“Saxon Crediton” A report, with images on the exploration of the area around Holy Cross Church to find out how Crediton looked in pre-Norman days.

Notes

“Saxon Crediton”. By spring 2007, the early results of the Ł40,000 “Time Team” style research into the Saxon Cathedral known to have existed from 909 A.D. onwards should be known. A member of the project team will give a talk on this, illustrated by photos of the project.

4th Club Trophy Competition. This is a themed competition, the theme being “Danger”.  Apart from this, the rules and the scoring will be the same as those for the preceding three competitions.

Dusk & Dark
An outdoor evening of low-light photography.
Notes

“Dusk & Dark”. A couple of years ago we had a successful, but very cold, night-time photography session. Hopefully by organising this event for the spring we will be able to practice in the changing light as dusk turns to full dark, and maybe avoid hypothermia! The probable venue will be the Exeter Quay area and we may adjourn to a local hostelry afterwards, for a drink and a snack.

Presentation of the “Opposites” portfolios. Members can present & talk about their work and vote on the best portfolio and the best individual image.

Interclub 4-way Digital Projected Image Competition. Following last year’s successful pilot exercise, hosted by us, this will, we hope, become an annual fixture. Please note that although this is an AWAY fixture, hosted by Exmouth Photo Group, it is on a Friday evening & there replaces our usual club night
